NoDa Public Gallery #2 has been stolen?!?

A note from NoDa Public Gallery:

When we started the NoDa Public Gallery project, it was an experiment. We wondered if anyone would respond to free artistic expression in public places. We wondered if the city or the negligent owners of the property would notice or care. We wondered if the art would be stolen, vandalized, removed, loved, hated or ignored. We’ve gotten all of those reactions so far, and hopefully we’ve inspired people to make the world around you more interesting than it would be otherwise.

We were very surprised to see that all four panels from Public Gallery #2 had been removed (stolen?). Public Gallery #2 is located in front of the neglected 1930′s service station on N. Davidson Street between Tasty Yo and Dialect Design (one of the two buildings along with the former Barbaria’s Pool Hall) that have sat neglected and rotting looking for million-dollar investments.

The panels were forcefully removed from their eye-hooks.

This is not the first time a panel has been removed from a Gallery. “Ava” the portrait of the  young girl was removed last year from Gallery 1; and just as mysteriously as it disappeared, it reappeared a week later. A few months ago, the portrait of the dog in Gallery 1 was removed and replaced with a new painting – which we found curious/exiting/perplexing – because we want more contributions to the Galleries, but not at the expense of someone else’s work. (We would love to get the dog portrait back!).

So now, PG#2 is empty. We will have to tell the artist that someone liked their work so much that they stole it. The artist understood from the beginning that this was a possibility, and hopefully will be more flattered that disappointed. None the less, as the collective group that dreamed up the idea of NoDa Public Gallery, we are proud and perplexed daily by the response we get.

For anonymity sake, NoDaRioty handles our public relations. We call them our “benefactors.” And we are the “curators.” If you know anything about the missing paintings, or would like to contribute to the project, you can contact NoDaRioty for more information.

Thanks!

NoDa Public Gallery Collective

(NoDaRioty would also like to add that our original ALL ARTS MARKET signage was stolen from the front wall of the former Consolidated Press building.  Any tips or returns of any of the mentioned stolen items will be appreciated and treated with anonymity and discretion.)

Will Puckett on WSOCTV

Every day, I’m excited to drive under Matheson Bridge and see the progress on the mural by artist William Puckett. Each day I love it even more!

NoDa has been needing public art at its entrances, and this is an amazing first installation. Read the story at the official webpage or join the group on facebook.  This project is funded in part by ASC, NoDaRioty, and (soon) the City of Charlotte.

Volunteer labor is still needed, so if interested, contact info@mathesonbridge.com.

March All Arts Market

What better place to experience the edgy, artsy flavor of NoDa than the All Arts Market at Neighborhood Theatre? We’re back for another weekend of great sites, sounds, and people Friday and Saturday, March 11 & 12.
This will be NoDaRioty’s 7th All Arts Market, and we aim to improve and expand the experience each time. We have 85 artists who are so eager to show you their creations, that on registration day, the servers of a professional, nation-wide event registration software company crashed because of the overwhelming response! That says a lot about the draw of this NoDa-born event. By providing this opportunity to artists and to local-friendly shoppers, we serve to bolster the presence of art in Charlotte’s Arts District!
