Reminder: Applications due by 12/18
to vend at Queen City Brewers Festival

Be a part of Charlotte’s craft beer scene by vending at this exclusively-local beer fest on February 4, 2012, at Neighborhood Theatre. The producers of the event are looking for 6-10 artists to feature to make this event especially “NoDa.”  As of my last Conversation with them, they are particularly excited about vendors who can produce art LIVE at the show.

We have only received a handful of applications, so we wanted to send out the reminder.  To apply is free, and if selected, artists will pay $15 to cover expenses for tables which will be provided.  (This is less than the price of an admission ticket – a great deal!)

If interested, please 1) submit a few sentences describing why your work would be a fit for this event, 2) attach two jpgs of samples of the work you’d be displaying, 3) note the price range of your pieces. Send all applications to nodarioty@gmail.com before December 19th (i.e. by tomorrow)!

NoVeMber Calendar

Saturday, November 12.

Thunder Road Marathon. Every year, local neighborhoods gather to cheer on the marathon runners. Last year, NoDaRioty created a faux brick wall and graffiti’d it to monumental effect! This year, the Wall will return, but we would like to see even greater artistic presence. This is an all call to artists to come out to 35th Street this morning (most runners will run by 9am-noon), set an easel up on the northeast sidewalk, and paint to your heart’s content! We especially need artists at speedbumps, but spread out and set up where you can. There will be free breakfast and drinks available at the Davy apartments as well as free NoDaWeen t-shirts to anyone who comes out and helps us cheer on the runners (and possibly win the $500 Community Spirit Award Prize).
Suggested driving route because of closed roads is Tryon to 36th Street.

Monday, November 14.

Street Vendor Discussion Meeting! 6:30 p.m. at Neighborhood Theatre. City officials, NoDa residents, NoDa Businesses, affected artists, and anyone else who is interested in weighing in is invited to this open meeting. We will be discussing all sides of the issues. (Does street vending affect the business of local retail shops? Should street vending be allowed? Should police be called on un-licensed vendors? Can we regulate what type of vendors are on the streets and where? Can we maintain the grassroot free-for-all we’ve had until now? etc.) Please come out and have your opinions heard!

Wednesday, November 16.

NoDaRioty meeting. Our group meets every 3rd Wednesday of the month (though not in December) at Salvador Deli at 7 p.m. Everyone is welcome. Tonight, we will be discussing our plans for 2012!

Friday, November 18.

November All Arts Market. Neighborhood Theatre from 6-10p.m.  Tell all your friends! If you are participating, post pictures of your work on our facebook page. Please everyone say you are attending our facebook event!

Monday, November 21.

Registration for the December 8&9 All Arts Market. Opens at 7:00 a.m. HERE. Booth prices will be $80 for the upper/bar area and $60 for the lower/stage area. The price covers both days. Genome will be featured on the stage at the December AAM.

NoDa Playing Cards are here and for sale! Look for them at All Arts Markets or contact us to get your double-deck for $15!

Queen City Brewers Festival

Save the date: Feb. 4, 2012. Keep watching for information about artist involvement in this upcoming event at Neighborhood Theatre featuring a diverse selection of over 30 beer styles exclusively from Charlotte-area breweries!

Important: Street Vending in NoDa – Public Meeting!

Street vendors have long been a staple of NoDa, especially on Gallery Crawl nights. However, this practice has never been officially sanctioned. Recently, businesses have begun restricting where vendors can set up, and in a few instances, the police have been called.

The NoDa Neighborhood Association is hosting an open discussion to find a solution to this problem. We expect local business owners, City officials, NoDa residents, and the vendors themselves to attend and explain their point of view and their concerns. Please help us protect the option for artists to vend their wares on the streets of NoDa! Come out and have your voice heard: Monday, November 14th, 6:30 pm at Neighborhood Theatre

All Arts Market:

October 21st: We expect a huge turnout for the night: Gallery Crawl Friday and the free Ghosts & Legends Tour. Even if you are not a vendor, please come out and support us, or at least pass the word along! Everyone: like our event on facebook and post on our page please. :)

November Registration: Follows right on the heal of the October market. Online registration begins Monday, October 24th, 7:00 a.m.

Graphic Artists:

Needed: NoDaRioty Webpage Slides!

We’d love your help to keep our webpage fresh and relevant. Please submit your graphics. We would like 4 or 5 regular header slides to cycle through. Keep this in mind:

  • Specs: high-res, 976px wide by 362 px high.
  • Content appropriate to NoDa, Charlotte, and/or Art.
  • Submitted artwork will be treated as public domain.
  • Ok to include your name or company’s name within the slide.
  • NoDaRioty is the final decider on what works will be used.

The Un-Conference

Free Admission. Saturday, October 22, 9am to 4pm: People from all industries will come and pitch a topic they want to teach, then everyone votes on what they’d like to learn about. Expect several topics on media marketing – a great resource for artists! Pitch your own topic as well. Register to attend at barcampclt.org. Located at Area 15 (512 E. 15th Street off of N. Davidson Street.)

Though admission is free, donations are welcome and go to support Speak Up, a local charty. Speak Up is a street magazine for Charlotte sold primarily by homeless/low-income people. Many articles feature art and there is an interview with one of our artists in this month’s publication.

The Door Project

CAST. Carolina Actors Studio Theatre (newly relocated in NoDa), NoDa School of Arts, and director Audrey Alford are teaming up with local artists. Alford is directing Jeffrey Hatcher’s adaptation of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, which runs 10/8-11/6 at CAST. One of the symbols in the play is a red door. Artists are invited to email her to set up a time to pick up a section of a door, which they will then create a piece of art on, inspired by the themes of Jekyll and Hyde.

Once the pieces are back at CAST, they will become an exhibit in the lobby. Everyone will have a chance to bid on the artwork in a silent auction throughout the run of the show, and CAST will share the proceeds with NoDa School of Arts. For more information or to set up an appointment, email director Audrey Alford at castjh@gmail.com

NoDaWeen

10.29.11. Neighborhood Theatre. This year, NoDaWeen will include the Frieky 5k costume race, Dinner (Mac’s Speedshop) & a Movie (Carrie), The Rocky Horror Picture Show at Midnight, and KiDaWeen (featuring Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit). All proceeds benefit Autism Services of Mecklenburg County. We want you to enjoy the festivities, but we also need your help…

KiDaWeen will be offered to children and their family 100% free of charge. To make the event extra special, we are looking for face painters – and we would love to have anyone who has skill with a paint brush (and won’t terrify children….too badly). Please inquire by email to nodarioty@gmail.com

All Arts Market

Don’t forget to register for the October 21st All Arts Market. The event Friday will be a Gallery Crawl in NoDa, and that same night, a group of NoDa history buffs will be leading the Ghosts & Legends Walking Tour which last year drew media attention and a large crowd. We expect this to be a huge night in NoDa, and we want you to be a part of it!  Registration opens next Monday, September 26th at 10:00 here.
